What is Remembrance Day? Each time I ask someone it seems like the answer changes but it comes to the same collective agreement. It is a day of gratitude, honour and an upmost respect for those that fought so hard and those that continue to fight each day for people like you and I. November 11th, 2016 I’ll be teaching a Remembrance Day community class in complete silence at Heartsong Yoga Studio in Renfrew, Ontario. There will be no cues, there will be no music until we reach the point of pranayama, meditation and relaxation then tingshas will be used to help with inhalation and exhalation. Renfrew is a small town in the backyard of the Nation’s Capital. There is a history in Renfrew of so many amazing hero’s and we also have a town of so many amazing veterans who call this place home.

There are so many different ways to show your gratitude on this day:

  • Thanking a Veteran/Thanking anyone who is currently fighting for peace and freedom
  • Wearing a poppy
  • Going to a ceremony (visit your provincial website to see where ceremonies are located)
  • Meditation
  • Moment of Silence

I wanted to host this class is to bring back a sense of community and to provide a different way of offering a sign of respect. I think it will be hard for some to be silent for 75 minutes. I think it will be hard for me to be silent as I gaze across the room but that is the least we can do, there is so much more we can do to help veterans during this time of the year and every day of the year. Heartsong will be accepting donations for the Local Poppy Fund that will be brought to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 148 in Renfrew. These funds can be used for acquiring grants for food, heating costs, clothing, prescription medication, medical appliances and equipment, essential home repairs and emergency shelter or assistance. It can help veterans to transition by providing education and training, I hope we are able to donate quite a bit. More so I hope that we can provide a practice that will instill peace, gratitude and connectedness. Take the time that day to provide more than a moment of silence. Include several moments to remember the moments, the single moments of sacrifice, courage and pride that someone has put forth and notice that these single moments come together to allow us to enjoy each day we have.

May all beings be free from wars
May all beings find peace and the root of peace
May all beings be free from suffering.
